Approaching a Smoke Free Future

What would change if a smoking ban were imposed on all centers?
Bowlers were asked how they thought their spending in each of the categories would change.
Asked about bowling-related fees the overall response was:

  • 10% would spend much less
  • 3% would spend somewhat less
  • 58% would spend neither more nor less
  • 23% would spend somewhat more
  • 7% would spend much more
The following chart graphically demonstrates how smokers and non-smokers react differently and
the overall impact that might have on revenue. Their answers to the other spending categories
were similar.
Influence of a smoking ban on future bowling fees spending
What is the effect on League Play?
As would be expected, many smokers select their leagues based on the smoking policy of a given league or center.
  • 18% say having the ability to smoke during league is a primary factor when
    selecting a league
  • 17% say having the ability to smoke during league is a secondary factor when
    selecting a league
  • 20% say having the ability to smoke during league plays a small role when
    selecting a league
  • 45% say having the ability to smoke during league is not a factor when selecting a
    league

What are they doing now? On one end of the spectrum, 3% smoke between every frame.
On the other, 8% do not smoke at all during league play. Eighty percent smoke every
few frames or between every game.

  • 3% smoke between every frame
  • 45% smoke every few frames
  • 35% smoke between every game
  • 9% smoke only prior to or after bowling
  • 8% do not smoke during league play
IF SMOKING RESTRICTED

Go to lounge frequently during league 35.2%
Look for a new league next season 20.1%
Would wait until after league to smoke 17.5%
Go to lounge once to smoke during league 15.1%
Look for a new league immediately 9.9%
Quit bowling 8.4%
"Other" 7.6%

What will this do to league time?
Currently the smokers said they spend an average of 25
minutes more per visit than the non-smoker. The study does not tell us if that is because
of time out for smoking or they are bowling more, but if smokers do go outside or to the
bar during their league play, centers will have to factor that into their schedules.
